A restaurant venture from the Black Dog will join the wave of new eateries coming to downtown Oak Bluffs.
Coastwise Pub, a full-service restaurant from the globally-recognized Island company, will move into 6 Circuit avenue, the space formerly occupied by Asian fusion restaurant Mikado, this summer after being approved by the Oak Bluffs select board on Tuesday.
Dan Pucillo, CEO and president of the Black Dog Tavern, approached the select board to tell them about the new restaurant, which he said will offer full-service breakfast, lunch and dinner on the town’s main commercial drag.
Though Mr. Pucillo characterized drink service as largely secondary to food service in the company’s prior business models, he said that the Coastwise Pub will embrace a cocktail bar atmosphere.
He also noted that the spot will sell coffee in the mornings — much to the delight of those in the room.
“Coffee and cocktails is our concept,” he said.
Mr. Pucillo and his team are in the process of renovating the space.
“There’s not a lot of work [to do] in that place,” he said. “Most of it’s aesthetic.”
Mr. Pucillo said the pub will not be open late and will keep the noise level low. He said that he hopes to stay open through Dec. 31 for the winter holidays.
While the menu will be distinct from the Black Dog Tavern’s menu, with dishes designed to reflect the Oak Bluffs summer vibe, it will feature a few Tavern favorites.
“Some of the classics are going to be there,” he said.

how is it not driving anyone nuts that on such a small island with limited commercial space, there are about 3 or 4 people who keep opening restaurants with redundant menus, conventional produce, frozen pastries, and no actual concept? in tucson, arizona, the government put a cap on rent in the historic downtown, in order to allow locals to open businesses and prevent chains, or big money investors, from taking over the real estate. maybe something to think about for the future of this island?
As long as they continue to serve good quality food and service and our islander friends are satisfied and keep patronizing their establishments we should be very appreciative of their efforts. They somehow are figuring out the housing problem for their staff and they train them all properly.
I would rather deal with a known successful operation than an inexperienced unknown owner or an empty space.
Please add a few different style options for onion rings french fries, like potato wedges or onion bloom.
