Seth Meyers to Host Three Vineyard Fundraisers

Comedian and late-night talk show host Seth Meyers will participate in three Island fundraisers this summer. Mr. Meyers has supported Island causes for many years. He has headlined the Possible Dreams event for Martha’s Vineyard Community Services the past six years, and this is his third year performing stand-up comedy in support of the Chilmark Preschool.

Mr. Meyers is adding a new fundraiser to his lineup this summer. Harbor Homes of Martha’s Vineyard will host Pizza, Beer and Bowling with Seth Meyers for the first time on Saturday, July 25. The organization supports individuals experiencing homelessness on the Island.

He said he is looking forward to the chance to support a new organization.

“The simple answer is, there’s a lot of great causes on the Island. It’s a place very near and dear to me. So when opportunities come out, I’m more than willing to jump in,” he said.

The first Vineyard fundraiser he participated in was over Zoom at the Possible Dreams Fundraiser in 2020 during the Covid epidemic. His mother-in-law, Joanne Ashe, convinced him to host the event because she is involved with Community Services. This year’s 48th annual Possible Dreams auction takes place at the Allen Farm in Chilmark on Saturday, August 8.

Mr. Meyers said he works hard to make each event stand out on its own.

“It’s always an interesting riddle to solve as to how you try to make them unique from one another, but all three are going to have their own different DNAs.”

He will host an hour of stand-up comedy on August 22 to help raise money for the new Chilmark Preschool building which opens in September. The event takes place at the Performing Arts Center at the regional high school.

“It’s a real throwback to doing theatre in high school to be on that stage at the high school,” he said. “I always look forward to that. It’s just a fun vibe to be inside a high school; it gives me the old goosebumps that I used to have.”

A longtime Chilmark summer resident himself, Mr. Meyers said he curates the performance content to resonate with the Island audience.

“Every year it’s about five to ten minutes of Vineyard material, and you just hope and pray that there’s going to be a new tick breaking on the scene,” he joked. “You’re going to get three to five minutes of tick comedy right out of the gates.”

The Pizza, Beer and Bowling event to support Harbor Homes takes place on July 25 at the Barn, Bowl and Bistro in Oak Bluffs. In addition to hosting duties, Mr. Meyers will bowl a frame in each lane with participants.

Mr. Meyer’s wife, Alexi Ashe, grew up visiting the Vineyard, and later brought him to visit. The couple now spends the summer on the Island with their three children.

Mr. Meyers said he tries to give back to the Island in whatever ways he can. He added that the shared love of the Vineyard is what makes each event special.

“Everybody there, the one thing we all have in common, whether we live here year-round or come here for the summer, we love this place,” he said. “It’s nice to be there all together on a night where we’re in service to the Island at large.”
