Edgartown’s Harbor View Hotel has launched a new initiative to give back to the Island community through its Hospitality With Heart program.
Bernard Chiu, owner of the Harbor View, hosted a luncheon on July 30 alongside his executive team to celebrate the 12 nonprofit organizations selected as the inaugural recipients. He said the program aims to reach a wide-range of Island needs with multi-year commitments.
“Each and every organization serves a different purpose on the Island,” Mr. Chiu said. “A big part of our goal is making sure we are giving back to the Island residents, knowing that a lot of people on the Island could use help.”
The selected nonprofits are divided into six different categories: youth and education, health and wellbeing, food security, history and preservation, conservation, and workforce development.
The donations are part of a continuing effort by Mr. Chi to give back to the Island. Since buying the Harbor View in 2018, the hotel has contributed more than $600,000 to Vineyard nonprofits. It also recently instituted a voluntary one per cent Martha’s Vineyard Community Fee to its nightly room rates, which directly contributes to the Martha’s Vineyard Community Fund.
For Mr. Chiu, solidifying the hotel’s ongoing efforts to support Islanders was an easy decision.
“It’s a simple answer. The hotel is a big part of the Island community…and there’s no better way to demonstrate that than supporting the community that we are in.”
