The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys cross country team won the Cape & Islands League Championship last weekend.
“We were down two of our regular top runners,” Coach Joe Schroeder said. “Due to sickness and injury, we were missing four total guys, so some others really stepped up. I’m really proud.”
The team also won the championship last year, and Mr. Schroeder said the boys were excited to defend their title.
After the race, Mr. Schroeder highlighted senior Greyson Hartzband, who ran a personal best by 30 seconds and finished third on the team.
“It’s just want you want to see as a coach at a championship meet,” Mr. Schroeder said.
Mr. Schroeder also praised sophomore Ben Fuller, who had a successful meet despite not racing for a month. Mr. Fuller was the team’s top finisher.
“It says a lot about him as a person and a runner,” Mr. Schroeder said.
On the girls’ side, three of the team’s five runners competed this weekend. Senior Nevah Fitzgerald placed 10th overall, while senior Talia Young finished just ahead of senior Katelyn Tankersley, who ran a personal best.
The team’s next meet is the Coaches Invitational on Nov. 7, which Mr. Schroeder views as a warm-up for Division Championships on Nov. 14. Both events will take place at the Wrentham Developmental Center.
“Everybody goes to get a good feel for the course and compete against great runners,” Mr. Schroeder said.
