Officer Miguel Jarillo was sworn in as the Edgartown Police Department’s newest member during Monday’s select board meeting.

Mr. Jarillo comes to the Edgartown Police Department after serving as a police officer in Tisbury. Mr. Jarillo was born and raised on Martha’s Vineyard and has been serving in the Army National Guard since 2021. At one point during his service, he was deployed to Syria.

Mr. Jarillo attended the police academy while working as a police officer in Tisbury and previously worked as a summer officer in Edgartown.

“He graduated from Martha Vineyard Regional High School,” said Chief Chris Dolby. “[And], he worked for us in the summer of 2023. So, he’s familiar with us.”

In addition to his experience working as a police officer in Tisbury, Mr. Jarillo is fluent in Portuguese, which will be an asset to the Edgartown Police Department, Chief Dolby said.

The Edgartown police force has undergone some changes in recent weeks. Sgt. Ryan Ruley took the chief position in Aquinnah, and Sgt. Jeff Trudel also joined the up-Island department.

Chief Dolby was sad to see them go.

“First, I’d like to recognize Sergeant Ruley,” said Chief Dolby. “It’s hard to see somebody like that go. That’s a significant loss for the police department.”
