The Vineyard boys swim team completed the three-peat Saturday on the Cape, winning their fourth Cape and Islands league title in the past five years.
“What an amazing way to end the regular season,” Coach Jennifer Passafiume said. “The team has put in a lot of work over these last nine weeks and was ready to compete…this team has grown into quite the family this season.”
Not only did the boys retain their title, but they also broke two school records and tacked on two more post season qualifications in the process. The event started with a bang that resonated longer than the starting pistol. In the 200 Medley, the first race of the day, the Vineyard team of Grady Stalgren, Michael Calheta, Ronan Mullin and Moses Thomson placed 1st in a record time of 1:47.52.
Calheta kept the momentum going with another record-breaking swim, this time individually in the 100 breaststroke at 1:12:12. Then Claus Smith qualified in his first individual event for the South Sectional Championships at 24.23 in the 50 freestyle. And lastly, the 200 freestyle relay team of Mullin, Thomson, Calheta and Smith emptied the tank to finish first and qualify for states with a time of 1:37.91. It was the fastest that the group has finished this season.
The girls team also finished on the podium in third place, the highest they have ever finished in a Cape and Islands League Championship. Their best result of the day came in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Zoe Treitman, Kyla Webster, Nora Duncheva and Maybeline Brown finished in 4:38.54. Individually, Kyla Webster had the best result of the day for the girls, finishing the 500 freestyle in 6:36.44, shaving nearly 13.5 seconds from the last meet.

Last Saturday was also the Cape and Islands League indoor track championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury. It was quite the day for the Vineyarders as MV’s student-athletes stood proudly on the podium after numerous events.
Two runners took home the gold: Luis Costa in the 600-meter with a time of 1:26.29, and Enzo Reis in the 55-meter hurdles at 8.25 seconds. Silver medalists were Ben Fuller in the one mile with a time of 4:56.79; Dalvin Titus in the JV 55-meter hurdles at 7.91; the 4×200 relay team of Jamison Mello, Lucas Martins, George McDow and Kaniel Morgan finishing in 1:38.24; and the 4×400 relay team of Reis, Costa, Nicholas Gomes and Anthony Da Silva at 3:47.96. Bronze winners were Fuller in the 1000-meter at 2:54.9; Morgan with a 40-09.5 toss of the shot put; and Gianni Navarrete in the JV 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.02 seconds.
Now, the focus shifts to qualifying for the state championships on Feb. 14. There are two chances left on the schedule to make the cut.
In other sports action, the boys basketball team has pushed their winning streak to five straight. Last week, in front of a home crowd, they beat Monomoy 59-53, Cardinal Spellman 62-53 and Nauset 64-53. With 11 wins and two losses, they are currently ranked 10th in the division three power rankings and staring down a Cape and Islands League title with six games left on the schedule.
Landon Lepine and Jacoby Light are leading the offensive charge for the Vineyarders along with a supporting cast of Tauras Biskis, Fletcher Zack, Connor Beeson and Leo Napior. Not only is MV loaded with shooters, but their defense can send any opposing offense into a tizzy.

In the win over Monomoy, Lepine’s 14 points and 14 boards, along with 15 points and six steals from Light, were too much for the Sharks to handle.
Then, against Cardinal Spellman, Light was the leading scorer with 23, six of which came from the free throw line to ice the win in the closing minutes. Lepine notched another double-double, this time 22 points and 15 rebounds, and Beeson chipped in eight points and six rebounds.
In their most recent victory against Nauset, Lepine exploded for 22 of his 28 total points in the first half while racking up another 15 boards for his third straight double-double. Light finished with 15, Biskis had 11 and Zack had eight points and seven rebounds.
On Wednesday, the boys are on the road for a rematch with Cardinal Spellman in Brockton. On Friday they are back at home, looking to avenge an earlier loss to Dennis-Yarmouth. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

The girls basketball team is continuing to fight for a chance at the playoffs. They are weathering a tough stretch of their schedule right now and need to win five of their last six games to make the play-in tournament.
Last Friday, they got a much-needed win over Nauset on the road 44-27. The Vineyarders were down at halftime but started the third quarter on a 6-0 run and never looked back. Madis Pitman was MV’s high scorer with 15 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Her sister, Nala, also had a big game with 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Bella Burns also played a big part in the win with 10 points and four assists.
Up next, the girls are on the road to face Fairhaven and Dennis-Yarmouth before their next home game against Sandwich on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
The girls hockey team had a huge 4-3 overtime win last Saturday at home against Marshfield. Abby Geary couldn’t have been more clutch. She tied the game with 16 seconds left, then stole the puck from a defender off the overtime faceoff and outmaneuvered the goalie to win it seven seconds into the extra period.
Mackenna Metell also scored a goal to cap off a four-point week for the sophomore forward, and Reese Malowski potted one as well.
The win was a much-needed bounce-back after falling to Falmouth earlier last week. At 6-8, the girls are currently ranked 17th in the division two power rankings. With a few more wins, they could be in a position to host a playoff game. On Wednesday, they will be home with a chance to avenge an earlier loss to Dennis-Yarmouth. The puck drops at 4:20 p.m.
The boys hockey team also has a big game on Wednesday as they will be traveling to Sandwich to take on the Blue Knights, the fourth-ranked team in division four. After already beating them 1-0 this year, the sixth-ranked Vineyarders are facing a team looking for revenge. If MV can take them down again, it would be a huge boost to their playoff standings.
Most recently, the Vineyarders lost to Falmouth 5-3 last Wednesday, but had previously beaten Bourne 3-0. Goal scorers in the win were Joe Mederios, Peter Williamson and Rowan Huffam. Russel Coogan earned the shutout in net.
Next home game for the boys hockey team is Saturday, Feb. 7 against Pymouth South. Puck drops at 5 p.m.
