Warm weather or cold, spring sports have sprung at the high school and the Vineyarders are back in action.
The girls tennis team is coming off a Division Three state title appearance last season with hopes of another deep playoff run. This season kicked off on Nantucket with a clean sweep of the Whalers on a blustery early April Saturday.
MV’s first singles’ Laina Dubin won her match 6-0, 6-0, second singles’ Charlotte Marshard won 6-0, 6-2, and third singles’ Josey Johns won 6-3, 6-0. In first doubles, the Vineyard’s pairing of Zoe Treitman and Leah Thomson won 6-1, 6-1, and in second doubles Bella Schilling and Tessa Shultz won 6-1, 6-1 in second doubles to round out a dominant day for the girls.
On Wednesday, Saint John Paul II comes to the Island for the girls’ home opener. The Lions were some of MV’s fiercest competition last year and should make for an exciting early challenge. Play is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.

The boys tennis team also had a strong run in the playoffs last year making it to the semifinal round. This year’s younger group will try to make some noise of their own. After falling in a very close contest to Cape Cod Academy to begin the season, the Vineyarders bounced back to beat Nantucket 3-2 at home last weekend. This was the ninth win in a row against the Whalers for MV boys tennis.
Next, they will take on Dennis-Yarmouth on the Cape Wednesday before their next home matchup with Sandwich on Friday at 3 p.m.
The baseball team also had a victorious weekend, defeating the Whalers 8-4 at the Shark Tank. Eli Bryant toed the rubber for the Vineyarders and tossed four shutout innings with five strikeouts. MV’s offense scored all of its runs in the first two innings, seven of which came in the second. Lathrop Keene and Peter Williamson each had 2-RBI singles in the inning as purple batted around and chased Nantucket’s pitcher.
Things got a little dicey in the later innings as the Whalers loaded the bases, but Chris Cardoza came in from the bullpen to close the win out for MV, making it seven straight wins for the Vineyarders over Nantucket.
Up next, the boys travel to Falmouth on Wednesday to face a tough Clipper squad. They’ll be back on the Island to play Dennis-Yarmouth on Friday at 3:15 p.m.

In one final victory over the rival Whalers, the sailing team started its season with a 3-1 triumph last Thursday. MV’s sailors are loaded up for another successful season as they have got their eyes set on a top 10 finish in the New England Schools Sailing Association.
The softball team is still looking for its first win of the season. They are in the midst of a five-game road trip to start the year. The first home game will be against Brockton on Saturday at 11 a.m.
The track team started things off at the Trojan Invitational at Bridgewater-Raynham High School last Friday. MV competed with New Bedford High School, Oliver Ames and the hosts, Bridgewater-Raynham.
MV’s athletes came home with several top finishes, including George McDow’s first place in the 400 meter at 53.31, Ben Fuller’s first in the one mile at 4:59.23, Samilly Guimares second in the 200 meter at 27.75, and she also took third in the 100 meter at 13.27. Anthony Da Silva finished second in the 400 meter at 55.83, Enzo Reis placed second in the 110 meter hurdles at 15.62, Nala Pitman tossed the shot put 24’4" for third place, Katelyn Tankersley also had a third in discus with a 68’10" throw, Luis Costa finished third in the 800 meter at 2:01.9, and he was part of the second place 4×400 relay team with Da Silva, Reis, and McDow. They finished with a time of 3:34.72.
Up next, the Vineyarders have the first Cape and Islands League meet next Thursday at Falmouth High School.

Girls golf continues to build on a very successful first season as a varsity sport at the high school. Last year, they just missed qualifying for the postseason, but with 10 returning players, the Vineyarders are aiming high, and they started off with a win over Monomoy on Monday at Eastward Ho! Country Club in Chatham.
Jocie Smith won her pairing two-down, Allie Bianca won hers by one hole and Clara Rabeni also won two-down. Laila Branca and Molly Langwat both halved their matches to bring about a final score of 3.5-2.5 in favor of MV.
This week, the girls will take on Falmouth and Dennis-Yarmouth at their home course, the Edgartown Golf Club.
Rounding us out are the boys and girls lacrosse squads. The boys have taken down Cardinal Spellman and Monomoy by a combined score of 30-2. High scorers so far this season for the boys are William and John Hoff, Fin Callen and Asher Savva.
The win over the Sharks was the first of three on the road before Sandwich comes to the Island next Thursday. The tilt begins at 3 p.m.
The girls’ two wins have come over Sturgis West (3-2) and Monomoy (9-5) on Monday. The match with the Sharks was neck-and-neck until the third quarter. After being tied 3-3 at halftime, the Vineyarders stormed ahead with four goals from Lara Sedlier. Ashley Silva and Brynn Savva each scored twice, and Alicia Silva netted the final tally. Alex Royal made ten saves in net.
On Thursday, the girls are on the Cape to play Falmouth Academy. They’re back home Saturday to take on Bourne; the action begins at 11 a.m.
