The girls and boys tennis teams, and the baseball team all won their first round playoff games at home this week. Girls tennis defeated Auburn High School on Thursday, boys tennis defeated Fairhaven on Friday, and the baseball team defeated Medfield on Friday.
After an undefeated regular season, the girls tennis team swept Auburn High School on Thursday 5-0.
“It was a great, great start,” said head coach Bill Rigali. “We got some nerves out of the way, and our girls did great.”
Auburn made the Vineyard earn the match, said Coach Rigali. The Vineyard tennis community — friends, family, and coaches — showed up to support their No. 1 seeded girls, who told the Gazette earlier in the season that they are out for a state title.
Coach Rigali was more careful with his words.
“One match at a time,” he said. “We want to have a couple good days of practice, and get ready to play our best on Monday.”
The girls’ next match is at home Monday at 3 p.m. against 16th seed North Reading High School.
The boys tennis team beat Fairhaen 4-1 on Friday afternoon. They now await the winnner of Nantucket and Newburyport.
The baseball team shutout Medfiled 8-0 in their first round. Next up is an away game against Falmouth on Monday.
