World Cup fever has brought Islanders from around the world together, attending watch parties at bars, backyards and even the Performing Arts Center at the regional high school.
On Wednesday evening the school hosted the Brazil vs. Scotland match, just a few hours after the last day of school took place and students headed out for summer break.
Dardy Slavin, president of Vineyard soccer boosters, spearheaded the event at the PAC with help from parents. She said the goal of the watch party was to create a space where the entire community, inclusive of all ages, could enjoy the World Cup together.
“I think it is important for the kids to have a place to come,” said Ms. Slavin.
Vineyard students certainly showed up, some of them harboring soccer dreams of their own. Bianca Robadel, a lifelong Brazil fan and rising freshman at MVRHS, said she is excited to try out for the soccer team and wanted to show her spirit at the watch party.
“I’m supporting my friends and my team,” she said.
Though Brazil fans dominated the PAC, a few Scotland supporters jumped up victoriously when Brazil’s second goal was negated because of a foul. Their cheers rang out, even as most of the theatre was filled with groans.
Scotland fans were nowhere to be found that night at Vineyard Grill, a Brazilian restaurant at Five Corners in Vineyard Haven. Mini Brazil flags were strung from the ceiling, and most everyone at the bar wore neon-colored green and yellow jerseys.
Fabio Zotte was happy that Brazil fans on the Island were able to take a rare break from work to cheer on their team.
“This is one day where everybody gets together and enjoys the game and sees each other too,” he said.
When team Brazil scored their third and final goal, the room was a blur of color and sound. People sitting at tables let out piercing whistles, and those at the bar banged rhythmically on the counter top.
Laiza Cimeno grabbed her friend and the two women yelled out loud as they jumped up and down with excitement.
Although Brazil’s 3-0 win over Scotland was decisive, Ms. Cimeno said she was worried her team might not make it far in the tournament. But she isn’t willing to write them off yet.
“We are Brazilians and we always have hope,” she said.
