The 21st annual Martha’s Vineyard Open will return to the tennis courts of Farm Neck and Vineyard Family Tennis beginning next weekend. The tournament has opportunities for tennis and pickleball players of all ages.
Proceeds from the adult tennis tournament directly benefit the Vineyard Youth Tennis scholarship fund. Proceeds from the junior tennis and pickleball tournaments will benefit SWEAR, an organization at the Martha’s Vineyard High School that empowers students to help end gender-based violence.
Mike Johns, the head tennis pro at Farm Neck, started the event in 2006 to raise money for Island organizations. Mr. Johns said the Vineyard Youth Tennis scholarship fund is a great way to get children on the Island interested in playing tennis.
“With the middle schoolers and high schoolers’ success, we’re seeing that with more effort at the grassroots, with the littles, we can give opportunities to more kids on the Island to try it, get hooked and play,” he said.
When the tournament first started they had roughly 30 participants, Mr Johns said. Now it has grown to approximately 150 participants and 50 sponsors each year The weekend also includes a cocktail party and gala on Saturday, July 25, during the semi-finals of the pro tennis matches.
Mr. Johns said he’s looking forward to some “healthy competition” throughout the tournament.
“It’s unique in that we may have some middle school or high schoolers in the same draw as some seniors, so it’s really a nice sort of event that brings all kinds of players together that maybe ordinarily wouldn’t be on the court together,” he said.
This is the first year the tournament will include both pickleball and juniors categories, which take place the weekend after the adult tennis tournament. Additionally, the open is adding amenities this year, such as a players’ lounge, to encourage ongoing support.
The adult tournament takes place from July 24 to 26 at the Farm Neck and Vineyard Family Tennis locations. The junior tennis and pickleball tournaments will be from July 31 to August 2 at Vineyard Family Tennis and Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School.
