Alice Atwell Fairstein of Mount Vernon, New York, known also as Bobbie, died on July 3. She was 88.
Born on April 17, 1920 to James and Ida Atwell, she was a 1941 graduate of the Mount Vernon Hospital School of Nursing and served as a U.S. Navy nurse during World War II.
In 1943, she married her husband, the late Samuel Johnson Fairstein, a fellow of the American College of Anesthesiology and Chief of Anesthesiology at Mount Vernon Hospital from 1957 to 1984.
In 1965, Alice joined the staff of Louise Wise Services of Manhattan, where she was a supervising pediatric nurse, participating in the care of thousands of infants and children until the agency closed in 2004, forcing her retirement at the age of 84. In 1976, she received her bachelor of arts degree from the College of New Rochelle.
Alice made her first trip to the Vineyard in 1959 with her husband, and returned often for summer vacations.
In 1987, when her daughter, Linda, married Justin Feldman, Alice became a frequent visitor to their Chilmark home, spending many weeks with them during the summer, and enjoying holidays on the Island – New Year’s, Easter, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day. She was especially fond of dinners with friends, long afternoons at Black Point or Squibnocket, eating at The Bite and the Galley, and cooking anything that caught her fancy at Larsen’s Fish Market.
Alice will be remembered for her skilled medical care and compassion, her wise counsel to friends of all ages, and the great spirit of joy with which she lived her very full life. Alice loved being a wife, mother and grandmother above all else.
Survivors her daughter and son in law Linda Fairstein and Justin Feldman of Chilmark and Manhattan; her son and daughter in law Guy and Marisa Fairstein of White Plains, N.Y., grandchildren Lisa and Marc Fairstein; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and scores of devoted friends.
A memorial service was held in her honor on July 7 in Bronxville, N.Y., where she was eulogized by her children, several relatives, and her dear Vineyard friend, Vernon Jordan.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.
