The Battle of Atlantic on the playing fields of Nantucket saw tough competition all day but only the girls soccer team emerged victorious for the Vineyard on Saturday.
The girls team defended their Golden Anchor trophy in a 1-0 victory in extra time, with Laney Light scoring the winning goal, on an assist from Leah Thomson.
“[Leah] just made a perfect through ball,” said Ms. Light. “Then I had a good touch and just shot and it worked out.”

The field hockey team lost a close 1-0 game, and the boys soccer team was defeated 2-0.
The football team, back competing for the Island Cup after having to forfeit last year, had a long day on the field, losing 56-7.
Throughout the girls soccer game, the team’s defense was constantly put under pressure. Ultimately, the game came down to intensity, said head coach Matt Malowski.
The field hockey team also fought valiantly, letting up just one goal in the second quarter. The team had six penalty corners and senior goaltender E.B. Carestia made 12 saves, earning her over 140 saves all season.

The men’s soccer team gave up one goal early and another late in the game.
“It’s unfortunate that today didn’t go our way,” said head coach Rodrigo Honorato. “Congratulations to Nantucket for winning the Battle of Atlantic.”
All the teams were supported by a robust fanbase who made the ocean crossing and continued to cheer the teams until the final moments of each game.

“What are our school athletics without the support of parents, friends and family,” said Liane Dixon, the head coach of the field hockey team. “I think they could definitely hear it and feel the positive energy, especially once we started rolling. It was pretty invaluable, to be honest.”
