Thomas Peckham, of Pawcatuck, Conn. died on Oct. 5 in Westerly, R.I. He was 84.

Thomas Peckham.

Tom was born on June 13, 1942 in Westerly, the oldest of four children born to Arthur and Ernestine Peckham, and spent his childhood and early school years with them on their family farm at Hinkley Hill.

When the family moved to Florida, Tom attended the Bolles School in Jacksonville, and he later graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.

He spent most of his young adult years in Aspen, Colo., where he had his own real estate business. He was an avid skier, and he made several lasting friendships with people he met while enjoying the beautiful slopes of Aspen Mountain.

He also enjoyed extended hiking trips with friends, and packing the correct gear for every experience. He loved fixing things, and was patient and persistent in making certain the job was done right.

He also shared a love of Martha’s Vineyard, where his mother, Ernestine (Mayhew), was born and raised. The Peckham family built a home in Chilmark, and Tom loved spending time on the family beach at Aquinnah, and spending time with his Mayhew cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Virginia Welch, and his sister Deborah Peckham.

He is survived by his sister, Prudence Marsh, and brother-in-law, Elliott Marsh, of Ashfield, and nieces Carrie Welch, Katherine Welch, Alexandra Moncy and Samantha Marsh, and their families.

Tom was an independent guy who lived on his own terms. He was a much-loved son, brother, uncle and friend, and we pray that he is now at peace with our loved ones.

A celebration of life will be held privately.
