The day was June 19, 1865

Two and a half years after

The Emancipation Proclamation

Freedom came to Galveston

Joining the millions before

Not in a day but over several years

Slavery by any other name remained

With no food, money

Or a place to begin

Nonetheless, on Juneteenth

Jubilation, singing, and shouting

Erupted with news of freedom.
