Moments of true triumph rarely arrive in isolation. Instead, they tend to rush in all at once, transforming an ordinary week into an unforgettable symphony of achievements. This past week, for many of our community members, was a powerful testament to the rewards of dedication academic triumphs, career advancement and the ultimate display of equestrian capability — we are rich in positive outcomes.

The heavy chords of Pomp and Circumstance echoed across college campuses, a familiar melody signaling the end of one chapter and the arrival of another. Sitting in the crowded stadium, Sarah Doyle and Bret Stearns leaned forward, their eyes scanning the sea of identical caps and gowns in search of son, Graham. There he was. Colgate University may have been his home, but he flipped his tassel from right to left, promenaded across the stage and was ready for the next chapter.

Parents Jill and Ted and sisters Charlotte and Kat cheered as Lily Bernhard took her diploma, shook the president’s hand, and officially became a Bowdoin College alumna. Holding that diploma wasn’t simply a beautiful, monumental ending, it was the very first sentence of a much longer, unwritten essay.

Janet Weidner and Tom Ruimerman made their way to the Boston College campus to watch son, Peter, walk across the stage after earning a law degree. Ever since he was a little kid, Pete has always loved learning. His nose might not always be buried in a book, but he’s always been conversationalist — a skill he will now put to work. Well done, Pete. I am proud of you.

The early morning mist was just beginning to lift off the sprawling, bluegrass pastures of the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington when Bella Thorpe and horse Bella entered the dressage ring. As an equestrian, competing at this world-renowned venue is a dream in itself, but this particular weekend was about executing the FEI Prix St. Georges test. Her months of training, fine-tuning transitions and mastering ring craft were about to be put to the ultimate test under the watchful eyes of the judges.

Bella saluted to conclude the test, a wave of relief and accomplishment washed over her. Moments later, the scoreboard displayed their final result: 67.5 per cent. In the highly competitive world of dressage, securing this score is not only a remarkable achievement, but it also held up as the highest score of her class. To top it all off, mom Julie Flanders traveled to Kentucky to cheer her on. Well done, Bella and Bella.

The long weekend was an invitation for folks to travel to town and dust off the cobwebs accumulated over the winter and reacquaint with friends they haven’t seen. The winter stillness vanished, replaced by the rhythmic hum of arriving cars and chatter along Basin Road and the Chilmark Store porch. Robert and Stephanie Shalhope along with son Jack, Bob and Liane Schroeder, Peter Harrison and sister Kristen, Andy Bluestein and Laura Scrimgeour and more have injected a vibrant, colorful pulse into the community.

A rainy day may have forced a change in the original venue, but it cannot wash away the significance of the Blessing of the Fleet. Relocating from Menemsha harbor to the covered space of the Chilmark Church reminds attendees that traditions are ultimately about the people who preserve them, not the locations where they are held. The community demonstrated that its resilience and respect for the sea remain steadfast, come rain or shine. Thank you to Rev. Janet Stoddard for facilitating the spiritual and cultural core of our maritime heritage.

A Coast Guard change of command represents more than just a transfer of leadership; it is a pledge of continuity. Onn Friday, May 29, we will thank Nick Sedberry for his service, and we look forward to the continued excellence and maritime stewardship that Tyler Vanderhaden will continue to deliver. Congratulations to you both on your promotions and new ventures.

While presidential races capture national headlines, municipal votes directly shape daily life. On June 2, 2026 the doors will be open at the Community Center between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. so we may cast our ballots regarding the MVRHS full-scale renovation and addition. Mark your calendar. Your voice matters.
