It is September and already the long sleeves came out, the flip flops were changed to sneakers and the fans were turned off along with the AC. I know it won’t last, but it is the time of year to keep that sweater nearby.
Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. It is the beginning of a new school year, so the birthday list is not available yet. But when it is let’s see how long it will take me to go over to the school and get it. In the meantime, I hope you all had a special day.
Like most Island businesses, at Donaroma’s we hire summer help to help with the watering, moving plants, loading compost, mulch and whatever heavy things customers buy. A few summers ago we hired this young man who was the son of a good customer. We loved him right away as he fit in like he had been working with us for years. He was cute and charming. We had a lot of fun with him and at the end of the summer we were sad to see him go. He did come back to the nursery to visit on his vacations so we kind of kept in touch.
I found out Tuesday that we are now employed by the same company. Charlie Leitner is a writer for the Gazette, and I had no idea because all my columns are written at home. He came into the nursery this week as he was doing an article on one of our managers, and he stopped by the shed to say hello. Charlie has done a lot in these past few years including serving our country, but he is still the charming, kind man we knew he would be. We were lucky to have him all those years ago.
The Edgartown Library has its September newsletter out. With fall coming they have some great events coming up for all ages. Local photographer Alex Wright will exhibit his art in the library’s program room for the month of September. Also, get your CLAMS card to borrow books from the library and you can also connect it to the Libby app on your phone or iPad so you can have access to many books at home or on the road.
Have wonderful Labor Day weekend. If you are traveling, please travel safe. I wish college students a great year, and if you are staying home, I hope your weekend is all you want it to be.
Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
