Thistle Jemison lives out at the edge of civilization overlooking the Wasque shoals. From that vantage point she has been busy composing a concert for us based on her harp and voice. I guarantee that what you see and hear will be new to your eyes and ears. In presenting her original scores she will be joined by fellow musicians from the big city. She will be performing at the Vineyard Playhouse this coming Saturday, Oct. 24 beginning at 7 p.m. Yes, you are right, that’s not on Chappy. It’s way up in Vineyard Haven. But that shouldn’t deter you from enjoying the efforts of our own Chappaquiddicker. Tickets are available in advance online at the Vineyard Playhouse website.

Also, this coming Saturday fire chief Alex Schaeffer will present an emergency preparedness talk starting at 9 a.m. at the Chappy Community Center. Learn how to prepare for future weather events. He will have suggestions more sophisticated than just filling your bath tub with water for flushing.

The resurfacing of the deck of the On Time 3 is completed. By the time that you read this, the On Time 2 will have made the voyage to Vineyard Haven for its biennial haul out for maintenance and Coast Guard inspection. The equipment trailers were taken up to the railway last week and the haul out cradle has been reconfigured to hold the unique hull of the On Time 2.

The scuba diver has cleared the marine railway tracks of storm tossed rocks and sand. The Coast Guard will inspect immediately and normal reconditioning of the underside of the ferryboat will begin. The propellers will be pulled off and taken to Plymouth for balancing. Now is the time when any worn mechanical parts or tired wood gets replaced.

As soon as all work is completed, back into the water she will go and return to service to perform her share of serving Chappy.
