The owners of Offshore Ale Company in Oak Bluffs announced plans at a select board meeting Tuesday to expand their business into the building next door.

Bill and Sue Honeycutt, owners of the brewpub at 30 Kennebec avenue, told the board they’re hoping to purchase and expand into neighboring 28 Kennebec avenue, which currently houses Notalot Farm Shop. Notalot opened in 2024, selling Island-sourced groceries and specialty goods.

Mr. Honeycutt said takeout services are a large part of the reason that the couple wants to add a new section to the brewpub, which they purchased from the previous owners in 2021.

“We’re looking to streamline our business, to improve the storage on our property, as well as better satisfy our takeout guests,” Mr. Honeycutt said.

Mr. Honeycutt noted a desire to support the vibrancy of downtown Oak Bluffs, which is plagued by storefront vacancies. The town’s nascent economic development council is trying to make progress on solving the issue.

“We’re proud business owners and proud property owners … and we’d like nothing better [than] to continue to invest in the community by purchasing this property,” Mr. Honeycutt said.

The Honeycutts didn’t propose anything for the board to officially vote on Tuesday and said they simply wanted to make members aware of their plans.

“We felt it was important that we came on today just to communicate the fact that we are doing this, in light of all the economic and business climate discussions that are happening in Oak Bluffs currently,” Mr. Honeycutt said.

Board members said they want to support business owners’ efforts to increase vibrancy downtown.

“I think we’re all supportive and appreciative of the communication as we move forward,” select board member Mark Leonard said.

Board chair Dion Alley shared a similar sentiment.

“I think it’s something that the board needs to be at least more aware of, more involved in … helping support our business community where we can,” he said.

  1. God bless, having immediate egress to escape volume downtown traffic is an asset at that location for takeout options.

  2. Offshore Ale is approaching its 30th anniversary next year and has long-established its role as the anchor of year-round business in OB. The Honeycutt’s have done an excellent job, and I strongly support their proposal.
