Wasn’t it magical to see all that snow disappear (poof!) before our very eyes? And by Monday morning tiny purple crocuses blooming by our front door. And witch hazel pretending to be early forsythia, one by Middletown Nursery and another at the Polly Hill Arboretum on State Road. Then there’s our lilac that had been bent over by the blizzard, but now, defying gravity, has straightened itself back up.

It was a short-lived taste of spring, but it promises more to come.

Bonnie Stacy, the chief curator of the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, greeted the sizable crowd at the opening reception of Tom Maley’s exhibit, with the comment, “Hello West Tisbury.”

It is true, our townsfolk made up the majority of the visitors to the opening last Friday, but there were plenty of friends from all the up and down-Island towns as well. Beldan Kurosman, a Field Gallery staffer in the late 90s, changed her plans at the last minute and came over from her home on the Cape to see the show and to visit with old friends.

Meanwhile, a number of West Tisburyites have been heading south to more tropical islands, and missed the otherworldly transformation from snow to mud and greening grass.

Three graduates from Martha’s Vineyard High School, class of 2023, have gotten together on St. John in the Virgin Islands. Annabelle Brothers, Emma Williamson and Vivi Hyland are enjoying an early spring break from their respective campuses. They are being joined by Ingrid Moore, also from West Tisbury, who too is on St. John for some sun and relaxation.

The women will be home on their own Island for a few days Easter weekend before heading back to their colleges for the grueling last semester of the school year.

Also island-hopping at this time are Everett Whiting and his fiance Korrine Altieri, who are sunning themselves on the barrier-island of Cancun.

Some with school-age children have returned home after visiting other islands during school break week. Patrick Ruel, his wife Bea Whiting and their children Nora and Asa enjoyed their holiday week on St. John.

Davis Solon, his wife Geena and their daughter Isla relaxed on Tortola, one of the British Virgin Islands.

Town clerk Tara Whiting-Wells suggests that anyone interested in working the polls at the town election April 10, and/or the primary on May 12, should contact her at 508-696-0148, or

townclerk@westtisbury-ma.gov, or drop in at the town hall.

Happy birthday greetings on Sunday, March 15, to Jib Ellis and Tammy Hersh. Jemima James will celebrate her birthday on Monday, March 16. St Patrick’s Day, Tuesday, March 17, is cake and candles day for the lasses Pat Kelly, Molly Martone and Pickle Eville.
