Jupiter, Moon and Saturn

Tonight, the bright gibbous moon appears between the two brightest evening planets Jupiter and Saturn. The moon will be between the zodiacal constellations Capricornus, where Saturn is residing, and Pisces, home this winter for Jupiter.

You’ll have no trouble figuring out which of the celestial objects is Jupiter, the brightest. Saturn is fairly bright, the brightest west of the Moon.

The Harvest Moon, full moon, is tomorrow night.

The distance of these three celestial objects is dramatically different. The Moon is a quarter million miles away. Jupiter is 372 million miles away and Saturn is just short of a billion miles away.
Next week, the Moon approaches another planet, the planet Mars. The two are together on the night of Friday, Sept. 16.
