A blizzard could dump up to two feet of snow on Martha’s Vineyard Sunday into Monday, according to new forecasts.

Islanders hoping to see the end of slush will likely be disappointed with National Weather Service predictions of between one and two feet of snow, and wind gusts as high as 60 miles per hour.

Dukes County is under a blizzard warning from the weather service from 4 p.m. Sunday to 7 a.m. Tuesday. Visibility is expected to be low due to the strong winds, and the weight of snow could bring down tree limbs and cause power outages.

The Steamship Authority warned that the high winds forecast for Monday could cause cancellations on the Vineyard and Nantucket routes, and the ferry line was waiving change and cancellation fees for the day.

The Dukes County Emergency Management Association advised people to have enough non-perishable food, water and medications for up to three days.

“Wet, heavy snow and strong winds can increase the risk of power outages,” the organization wrote in a social media post on Saturday. “Plan ahead so you and your family are safe and comfortable if the lights go out.”

Low-lying areas of the Island could also become inundated with floodwaters.
