Hi. My name is Kutter. And yes, I’m a dog, a miniature schnauzer. My master, Tom Dresser, asked me to write his annual rant about the Oak Bluffs post office.

As you know, dogs aren’t allowed in a post office. That’s how it is. So, I’m writing what I hear about.

Today is Wednesday. It is 85 degrees. I live in a fur coat. Since I can’t go inside the air-conditioned post office, my ol’ man hitches me to the nearby bike rack. I can see inside.

Last Friday my ol’ man was not happy that he did not get his Gazette. Nor on Saturday. Nor Monday. What happened?

Today he had a yellow ticket to pick up a package. With only three people in line, he figured he’d wait to pick up his package. Twelve minutes went by. There was still one person ahead of my ol’ man in line. And the line wasn’t moving.

My ol’ man looked out at me, with my tongue hanging out, sweating profusely. Passersby petted me, but no one gave me a drink. Finally, my ol’ man gave up. The yellow slip would have to wait.

Why can’t the Oak Bluffs post office be more efficient? Offer a window for package pick-up. Offer a line for outgoing mail. Every summer the post office crumbles and stumbles with inefficiency. It is a public service, not a business, but they don’t serve the public very well.

There. I’ve got that off my to-do list. Now I can take a long nap with a fan to cool me down.

Kutter lives in Oak Bluffs with Tom and Joyce Dresser.
