The Vineyard’s wonderful multi-use bike lanes (shared with pedestrians) have become much more hazardous this summer. I am speaking about those scooters and e-bikes that shoot along at speeds well over 20 miles an hour.
A traditional cyclist like me tends to go at about 10 miles an hour or slower, and I certainly take pains to bike safely and not crowd those strolling or pushing a stroller or walking a dog.
Some of those on scooters seem to be only 10 or 12 years old, yet they travel at speeds fit only for vehicles on the road. I wonder why they are permitted to drive e-bikes and scooters at all. At that age a traditional bike should suffice.
Like the mopeds of the 80s, speeding e-bikes and scooters ought to be banned from the dedicated bike/pedestrian lanes. The speed limit there should not exceed 15 miles an hour, which is fast enough.
