They are the big cheese of boys’ high school tennis in these parts, a dynamo of a team that has won 59 straight regular season matches and are the defending Division 3 South champions. Cape Cod Academy is the big bully of boys’ tennis on the Cape and Islands, a vastly superior program that can beat most teams with one hand behind their back.
More than 50 fishermen participated in the first Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass Shootout, a one-day, mostly boat fishing tournament, on Saturday, June 5. The Edgartown-based fishing contest owes its roots to the former annual Pink Squid Yacht Club spring fishing tournament and was taken over by those at Larry’s Tackle Shop.

There is another fishing boat in Menemsha. The blue, 55-foot offshore lobsterboat Retriever belongs to Capt. Alec Gale and will be used by him to transport fish from Menemsha to the mainland. Retriever replaces his previous workboat, the Jane Lee, a Bruno Stillman 55.

Jorgiana Paiva and Ademir Mendes of Oak Bluffs announce the birth of a daughter, Thaila Ferreira de Paiva, born on June 2, 2010, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Thaila weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces at birth. She joins big sister Thais.
Tisbury becomes Dublin on Wednesday night as Arts and Society — which organizes what is apparently the oldest continuous celebration of Bloomsday on the planet — presents its 32nd annual Bloomsday Celebration of Music and Drama based on the texts of James Joyce.
The program is on June 16, at 8 p.m. at Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven. All tickets are $15 and may be purchased at the door.
