Heavens’ Seven

Pleiades are the seven sisters of the sky. Since they are together forever in the heavens, there is no place for sibling rivalry in their relationships. Let’s hope that they get along — eternity is a long time.

Ospreys and Buzzards

Ospreys or fish hawks used to be very common along the shores of the mainland. Matter of fact, I recently heard that Buzzard’s Bay was so named due to the large number of ospreys found there. It appears that the less ornithologically inclined colonialists called ospreys buzzards in the 1600s. Probably several thousand ospreys summered along the south coast of Massachusetts when the first settlers arrived. The Birds of Massachusetts (Veit and Petersen) states that there were one thousand pair counted along the shore from Connecticut and Long Island to the Cape and Islands in 1940.

Despite Rocky Start, Squirts Emerge Victorious at State Tournament

It was a roller-coaster ride watching the Squirt C hockey team this season. With four losses in the first four games, things were not looking great. But behind the scenes things could not have been any better. The little team was growing in every sense, supporting each other and gaining confidence. Coaches Julie Hatt and Travis Thurber were teaching, giving these kids more than just hockey moves. The 11 players were given a weekly feed of encouragement and locker room motivational speeches, and the kids were listening.

Scrap Metal, Spies and Soldiers: A Girl Recalls Island in Wartime

The Vineyard was a frightening place for a young girl to be during World War II, but exciting too. Servicemen were walking the streets before their deployment to Europe. Navy and Army pilots conducting training exercises overhead occasionally came crashing into the ocean. And there were the constant rumors of enemy spies and submarines along the Island’s shores.
