Verizon Cell Service Will Get Major Boost Up-Island

Cell phone coverage in Chilmark and Aquinnah will get a boost, this time for Verizon customers, after the major carrier signed on to use the digital antenna system (DAS) in the up-Island towns.

Chilmark executive secretary Tim Carroll said on Wednesday that testing is in its final stages, and that full Verizon Wireless service could be available as soon as June 1 or July 1 at the latest. AT&T signed on to the DAS system as a carrier last year.

Island Couple's Love Story Lasted 81 Years

They met in Worcester when they were both in kindergarten. The 81-year love story of David and Doris (Swallow) Cron ended last week when Doris died Friday, May 24 and David died 28 hours later on Saturday, May 25, both at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. They had been married for 66 years and were respected real estate professionals on the Island.

Longtime Oak Bluffs Town Clerk Retires

Senior personnel changes are underway in Oak Bluffs, with the longtime town clerk retiring and a new acting fire chief in place.

Town clerk Deborah deBettencourt Ratcliff, who has worked for the office for 25 years and served as town clerk since 1997, announced her retirement this week. Her last day will be June 30.

The selectmen accepted her retirement with regret at their meeting Tuesday, and appointed assistant town clerk Laura Johnston as the acting town clerk.

Search Begins for West Tisbury School Principal

At a meeting Tuesday Vineyard schools superintendent Dr. James H. Weiss said he would like to avoid appointing an interim principal to replace outgoing principal Michael Halt, and hire a permanent principal in time for the start of the school year next September.
