A vast harbor improvement plan in Menemsha is largely complete after five months of work in the harbor. Chilmark executive secretary Tim Carroll said minor adjustments still need to be made, including replacing of some lightbulbs in bombards, finishing electrical work and securing the water line.
“The seagulls are already dropping lobster and crab claws on the docks,” Mr. Carroll said.

Spring is here at last, and Island Grown Schools celebrates the appearance of the first spring greens in school gardens across the Island.

We dedicated April to greens in our Harvest of the Month program, with taste tests at every school and school meals featuring local and regionally grown greens at least twice throughout the month.

More than 600 cyclists showed up at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School on a sunny, breezy morning to raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Boys' and Girls' Club.

Scarlet Pangia, age two and a half, and her father Jonathan were at Duarte's Pond off Lambert's Cove Road before five in the morning on Saturday. But they weren't alone; any good trout fisherman knows the fish can start biting before the sun rises. Some families arrived before 4 a.m., armed with Thermoses full of coffee. Some youngesters, like Emmy Carroll, arrived still in their fleecy pajamas. 

The Martha’s Vineyard Family Center, which has offered free classes, play groups and educational support to Island families with young children for 16 years, will relocate from the regional high school to the Nathan Mayhew Seminar campus in Vineyard Haven in the fall.

“We’re very excited to have a new home,” said Nell Coogan, development director for Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, on Friday. “We think it’s going to be a great spot.”

Vineyard sports is back in full swing after a brief break over April vacation, racking up both first wins and losses for respective teams and turning out personal best performances. After a tough start to the season, the boys' lacrosse team has found its footing with two wins this week. The boys' tennis team, meanwhile, remains undefeated.
