Lyme and tick-borne diseases discussion and support group meets on Monday, Oct. 18 at 6:30 p.m. at Howes House (across from Alley’s) in the West Tisbury Library. Dr. Enid Haller, ACSW, PhD, a year-round resident of West Tisbury will lead the talk including a question and answer session.

Habitat Seminar to Explain Island Home Opportunities

A First-Time Homebuyer’s Seminar, hosted by Habitat for Humanity Martha’s Vineyard, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. at Nectar’s by the airport. All are welcome to learn about Bailey Park Road Community Housing, Habitat and the application process for the house the group will begin building this fall.

The Island Scarecrow Festival will feature characters from literature this year. Each year Island businesses make a contribution to the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School in exchange for a handsome scarecrow custom-made by a school family. Scarecrows will be on display from Oct. 23 to Nov. 1.

For the second year in a row, the West Tisbury Free Public Library has won a five-star rating from the Library Journal Index of Public Library Service. The Oak Bluffs Public Library also is a star library, with three stars.

Even before she stepped on the Vineyard as the new minister of the Unitarian-Universalist Society of Martha’s Vineyard, Rev. Jill Cowie believed a deep spiritual power lies within those who live in an island community.

“Islands? Because there are distinct boundaries, I think it helps people create identities that are deeper. It makes people feel special about themselves. I think it also brings a level of commitment to life,” she said.

“When you live in a suburb or in Boston, you can start to feel diluted.”

Lea and Ted Rosbeck of Edgartown announce the birth of a daughter, Alana Sistine Rosbeck, born on Oct. 7, 2010, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Alana weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces at birth.

There will be an appreciation event on Saturday, Oct. 23 to honor Congressman William D. Delahunt and State Senator Robert O’Leary for their service to Vineyarders.

The event is from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and will take place at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury.

Everyone is welcome and asked to bring a finger food to share.

Next Serving Hands Food Distribution is Wednesday

Serving Hands (formerly called Surplus Food) will begin its 2010-2011 food distribution this week, on Wednesday, Oct. 20.

All distributions will take place at the First Baptist Church Parish House in Vineyard Haven. The parish house is the small building on William street right next to the church. The doors will open promptly at 1:30 (please do not arrive before 1:15, as another group uses the church) and close at 3 p.m. Food will be distributed until we run out. If you have a pantry card, please bring it.

Edgartown Pursues Solar Power Proposal

Edgartown selectmen are exploring possible sites for an ambitious solar panel project that if built could provide power to all the town’s municipal buildings.
