Baby, it’s cold outside; I have been singing this song all week. It doesn’t look as if there will be much relief in the near future so I hope you stay warm and snug.

I am about to write and circulate a petition I want you all to sign. Let’s add to Massachusetts state law, perhaps even federal law, a requirement that all leaf blowers have mufflers on them. What do you think?

On Monday night after 7:30 p.m. not a single car passed by my house; I suspect people were gathering to watch Monday night football and cheer on the Patriots in their convincing win over the New York Jets. We can expect more severe cold and possibly snow by weekend. It has not stopped all sorts of decorating from taking place, both indoors and out. The spirit of the holiday season is upon us. A thin film of ice is on Parsonage Pond for all to see — please do not attempt to skate on it.

Susan Savory: She Sells Storybooks by the Seashore

On Tuesday, Susan Savory, the recently installed children’s bookseller at the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore in Vineyard Haven, warmly surveyed her second floor domain. A mother and child quietly sat on the store’s beanbag chairs engrossed in the richly-illustrated, understated moral universe of the children’s book.

They are not in Ireland yet, but it’s the next best thing this Wednesday night at Offshore Ale in Oak Bluffs.

Students of Irish history at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School are raising money for their trip in February.

The night includes a feast of all things Irish: Leek and potato soup, smoked salmon and Irish brown bread, and Irish stew. For dessert there is chocolate stout cake with Bailey’s frosting. Seatings are at 5, 6:30 and 8 p.m.

Getting Cozy With Sheep: Minor Knight’s Art Delights

Oh, the weather outside is frightful. But the Mongolian sheepskin is so delightful. So let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

Hey, wait, isn’t it supposed to be the fire that’s delightful? Well, no real need for the yule log if dressed in Minor Knight’s handmade and very warm artwear.

Mother Earth Festival Evokes Food, Music, Community

Terra Madre Day is here today. Are you ready? And do you even know what it is?

Well, it’s a global mother earth celebration created by the slow food movement. This year’s focus is on the thousand days initiative that aims to develop community and school food gardens across Africa.

Here on the Island the day is being celebrated with a slow food potluck tonight from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Chilmark Community Center. The event is a gastronomical coming together as well as a benefit. All proceeds go to the Thousand Days initiative.
