Even those who work in the field of affordable housing — which now has become its own industry on the Vineyard — will readily admit there are no easy solutions to the problem.

Tonight, Rose Abrahamson will celebrate what she warns could be her last art opening. “I’ll be 87 in October,” she said by way of an invitation to come and preview her new paintings and collage work. “How much longer can I work?”

Island Firefighters Will Compete on Sunday at County Muster

For the first time in years, crews from all six Island volunteer fire departments will participate in Sunday’s Dukes County Firefighters’ Muster in Oak Bluffs.

While the firemens’ muster is firefighting work and play at its best, the festivities have a serious aspect. The muster is another opportunity to practice firefighting skills, with the help of a clock, a crowd and competition.

Housing Block Grant

Oak Bluffs and Tisbury have been awarded $615,909 for housing rehabilitation through a federal community development block grant announced by Gov. Deval Patrick. The towns will use the money to rehabilitate 18 housing units.

Magical Marionettes

Magical Marionettes

Dan Butterworth and his Magical Marionettes perform today, July 25, at 6 p.m. at the Tisbury School for the community.

Bring your kids, bring your parents, for Mr. Butterworth travels the world with a menagerie of characters — all moving on his intricate stage, into the air, and right out into the audience.

After the show, he will offer a demonstration of the tricks that lie behind the effects, so be sure to stay for insight into a rare art form.

Moonless Evenings

The evenings ahead are moonless. There is no interference from the moon until midnight or later. Tomorrow morning’s moon is in the last quarter phase. This opens the opportunity for a good evening of star hopping, looking for the constellations and what astronomers call deep-sky viewing.

Marianne Neill will be showing recent gouache paintings and pastels at the Chilmark Free Public Library from Saturday, July 26 through August 15.

The show can also be seen during library hours, every day except Sunday.

Puppets in the Garden

Puppets in the Garden is a special day for families to walk the paths of Polly Hill Arboretum and find puppet surprises among the trees. The program is set for Sunday, July 27, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the arboretum in West Tisbury.
