Some quick action and bold navigating by a charter fishing captain
on Friday likely saved the life of a New Jersey man who fell from his
boat into rough seas off Wasque Point on Chappaquiddick. The man was not
wearing a life jacket at the time and had to tread water for close to a
30 minutes before being rescued, authorities said yesterday.
Betsy Sheerr Leads Hebrew Center Institute

The summer speaker series put on by the Martha's Vineyard
Hebrew Center, explained Betsy Sheerr, is not a Jewish thing, although
she explained its motivation - and her own - in distinctly
Jewish terms.
"There is in Judaism an important concept of repairing the
world: Tikun olam," said the new chairman of the center's
Summer Institute.
Beverly Sills, coloratura soprano, devoted supporter of the arts and
longtime Vineyard seasonal resident, died on Monday at her home in New
York city of lung cancer. Ms. Sills, who was 78, was the wife of the
late Peter B. Greenough, a retired financial writer for the Boston
Globe, who died last September.

Rain Fails to Dampen Parade, Fireworks

All it takes to start a parade are some pots and pans and a couple
of kids.
A planned expedition to recover a mysterious rune stone on
Noman's Land reportedly inscribed with the name of famous Viking
Leif Eriksson has hit a snag. The state historical commission questions
the plan and the Chilmark historical commission has recommended against
removal of the stone.
For the second time in less than a month, Sengekontacket Pond has
been closed to shellfishing, and will remain closed indefinitely while
fisheries experts consider what to do about bacterial contamination.
It is Sunday morning and Bob Carroll and Eugene (Geno) Courtney are sitting in Mr. Carroll’s penthouse apartment at the top of the Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown.
