Dragonfly Program

Odonates — better known as dragonflies and damselflies — are one of the most beautiful and interesting groups of insects.

Explore them in a program at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary today, July 18, at 1 p.m.

In this program, Massachusetts Audubon regional scientist Robert Buchsbaum will go through the basics of dragonfly and damselfly life histories and identification.

The group will spend most of the time in the field at Felix Neck identifying odes.

Girls Guns and Glory

Boston-based band Girls Guns and Glory plays Friday at the Offshore Ale in Oak Bluffs on Friday night from about 10 p.m.

The band won a Boston Music Award last year and in 2008, the WBCN Rumble — the first roots, rock and country act to ever win the Rumble. One of just four unsigned acts in the Top 40, their latest disc, Inverted Valentine, is currently number 16 on the National Americana Music Association Chart.

Trinity Episcopal Church Sets Services, Evensong

On Sunday, July 20 and Sunday, July 27, the Rev. Ronald E. Ramsey, rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Arlington will be the celebrant and preacher at Trinity Episcopal Church, Oak Bluffs.

The chapel is opposite the Steamship Authority wharf in Oak Bluffs. The service begins at 9 a.m.

Dr. Ramsey is a graduate of Warner Southern College, Morehouse School of Religion and International Theological Center, and Trinity Lutheran Seminary.

Randy A. Lazarus and Elizabeth Adams Barnes announce the birth of a son, Harrison Adams Barnes Lazarus, born May 9 at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. He weighed 8 pounds, 15 ounces.

Esplanade Tops Annual Event, Diversity in Dance

Paul Taylor’s gravity-defying masterwork Esplanade, danced to Bach by the Taylor 2 company, tops a packed lineup for this year’s Diversity in Dance, the annual showcase of dance sponsored by The Yard.

The performance begins Sunday, July 20, at 6:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, with a dessert and champagne reception with the cast following.

The Holmes Hole Sailing Association continued its Thursday evening series of handicap sailboat racing from Vineyard Haven harbor with a 6 p.m. race on July 10. 

It was a warm, hazy evening with a fresh southwest wind of 10 to 15 knots. Ten boats posted for the start at red nun 6 outside of the Vineyard Haven breakwater.

Tennis Pro of Year

Tennis Pro of Year

Scott Smith, executive director of Vineyard Youth Tennis, recently received the regional pro of the year award from the U.S. Professional Tennis Association.

The award was presented at the annual convention held in Stratton Mountain, Vt.

Mr. Smith was also elected in February to the association’s Eastern New England board of directors.
