You could be an umpteenth generation Mayhew, Daggett or Pacheco on this Island, but these days if you order a new telephone line you’re going to feel as if you just got off the boat and asked the nearest bystander to point you in the direction of “Oaks Bluff.”

After talking to a few people, I find that I am not the only one who is amazed that it is already Memorial Day weekend. The weatherman is predicting 60 to 70-degree weather, so I’m sure with the weather and the long weekend, the Island will officially begin its summer and be quite busy.
Alden Besse, chairman of the Vineyard’s 2007 Crop Walk for the world’s hungry, recently gave Armen Hanjian, coordinator of the Island Food Pantry, a check for $4,708 from last fall’s walk.

Definition of a veteran, by an unknown author: A veteran, whether on active duty, retired, National Guard, or in reserves is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to the United States of America for an amount of up to and including his or her life. That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.

The boat schedule changed earlier this week and you can tell from increased traffic on the roads and in town that new arrivals are here, with more expected this weekend, which is the official start of the summer season. Many a backyard grill will be fired up for the first cookout of the season.
