A Walk in the Dark

Felix Neck is going dark, with nighttime walking that is.

Find out what goes bump in the night on Saturday, Oct. 22, as the wildlife sanctuary celebrates the coming of darkness with a guided evening walk. The journey finishes at a campfire with hot chocolate, s’mores and storytelling.

The evening is from 6 to 8 p.m. and registration is required.

The cost for members is $10 per group (up to 5 people), and $15 for nomembers.

All ages are welcome.

Local Compost Workshop Teaches Tip Top Soil Skills

This weekend Felix Neck and the Polly Hill Arboretum are hosting a compost tea workshop with Ann McGovern, Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s consumer waste reduction coordinator.

Wow, that’s a mouthful. Perhaps a bit of composting is in order for Ms. McGovern’s title. Like maybe, Lady Who Turns Garbage into Garden Gold. Yes, that’s more like it.

On Saturday night, Oct. 15, The Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School is opening up the doors to everyone’s inner Fonzie, or if you swing to a more aggressive time channeler, how about Marlon Brando in The Wild One.

“What are rebelling against? What’ve you got?”

Food and Wine Festival Has Legs

Food and Wine Festival Has Legs

This weekend there will be tongues doing the tango all over the Vineyard as the Food and Wine festival lands once again on our shores. Let’s face it, food never appears here in this style of abundant and delicious diversity except for during this annual event.

Where the Wild Things Are Eaten, Gastronomical Rumpus Begins

For the wild food crowd, grocery shopping begins when you leave the supermarket. On the other side of those automatic sliding doors is a diffuse (and free) marketplace filled with geese, berries, turtles, seaweed, deer, scallops and basically anything else you can digest. This Sunday marks the second annual Martha’s Vineyard Local Wild Food Challenge, and organizer and chef Bill Manson has imported the resourceful philosophy of the hunter-gatherer from his native New Zealand. The contest takes place at the Rod and Gun Club in Edgartown, beginning at 4 p.m.
