The Up-Island Regional School District committee last week agreed to hire a principal for Chilmark School to replace school head Susan Stevens, who retires at the end of the school year.

Harbor Homes executive director Kristin Leutz announced Sunday that the nonprofit is withdrawing its application because the zoning board of appeals referred the project to the Martha’s Vineyard Commission for review.

The Martha’s Vineyard Commission this week agreed to allow three previously-denied fireplaces at a mixed-use condominium complex in downtown Vineyard Haven, in exchange for the developer’s pledge to allow no further propane appliances anywhere on the property.

The new turbine — the first of 62 in the Vineyard Wind project, located 15 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard  — stands up to 837 feet above the water’s surface.

The new musical Billy Baloo has quickly become a hit for the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse, which is adding five more performances Oct. 23 through Oct. 28.

We've got a meteor shower this weekend. The Orionid meteor shower takes place tomorrow night and will be best viewed after the first quarter moon sets in the west. That will happen close to midnight. And if skies are clear, we'll have a great show. You could see as many as 20 meteors in an hour of viewing. Look towards the eastern sky. The radiant, the place where the meteors appear to originate is above the constellation Orion's head; and to the left of the bright red star Betelgeuse. This is an autumn favorite.

Tara Gayle, owner of Gayle Gardens Landscape Design, bought the 3.2-acre parcel on State Road last week. In an interview with the Gazette, she said she plans to continue running a nursery there with hopes of including more organic and native plants.

Calves in costumes, fresh pies, spooky jack-o’-lanterns and more autumnal treats and festivities will take over the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury Saturday for the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society’s annual Harvest Festival.
