Moving Beyond Race: The Dialogue Continues is the program on Wednesday, May 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center on Centre street in Vineyard Haven.

The Island Diversity Council, Martha’s Vineyard NAACP, and the Social Action Committee of the Hebrew Center will show the video Eye of the Storm: Sharing Powerful Lessons About Racism, followed by a community discussion. All are welcome.

Dee Geiger: Get the Wrap on Extraordinary Wontons

Get all wrapped up in a free cooking demonstration by Dee Geiger of Tea Lane Caterers as she presents Oh, the Things You Can Do With Wonton Wrappers! on Wednesday, May 14, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Chilmark Public Library. Samples and recipes will be provided.

Ms. Geiger will share her ideas for innovative ways to fill wontons, beyond the traditional pork and shrimp. She likes to be creative in her catering and enjoys developing specialty foods around themes like Old Fashioned Southern Barbecue and Mexican Fajita parties.

Alasdair Fraser, one of Scotland’s finest fiddlers, and Natalie Haas, the talented young Californian cellist will perform at the Katharine Cornell Theatre on Thursday, May 15, at 8 p.m.

Sweet Life Raises Champagne Toast to Yard’s School Program

After two successful benefit wine dinners for The Yard artists-in-the-schools program at The Sweet Life Café Oak Bluffs, owners Susan and Pierre Guerin are going bubbly, announcing an evening featuring Champagne from the world-renowned house of Veuve Clicquot, on Wednesday, May 14, at 6 p.m.

An aperitif and hors d’oeuvres will be followed by a four-course menu specially prepared to showcase the Champagnes. Winemaker Cyril Brun will be on hand to guide guests through a tasting of five different champagnes.

Signs of Spring: Dragonfly Opens Flower Art Show

Dragonfly Gallery opens its 13th season with its annual flower art show.

The opening reception for the flower art show will be held on Saturday, May 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Dragonfly Gallery, 91 Dukes County avenue, located in the Dukes County arts district of Oak Bluffs. The show runs from May 8 through May 18.

Jenny and David Littlejohn of Menemsha announce the birth of a daughter, Isabel Susan Littlejohn, born on April 21 at the Martha’s Vineyard Community Hospital. Isabel weighed 7 pounds, 2 ounces at birth.

Holding the Sheriff Accountable

If the state takes over the Dukes County sheriff’s department — and it appears that this will eventually be the case — Islanders likely will not notice the difference. The Edgartown house of correction will still be run as the local jail and the communications center, which is so integral to the Island emergency response system, will remain the same.

What will change is the sheriff will become more accountable for his budget. This is long overdue.

Protecting the Herring

More than one hundred fifty years ago, Henry David Thoreau noted the many rivers on Cape Cod named for herring. The day could come, he mused in his book Cape Cod, when people might find more Herring Rivers on the Cape than herring.

While that day has yet to come, the scarcity of herring in recent years from runs throughout Massachusetts, including on the Vineyard, has endowed Thoreau’s observation with an eerie prophecy.
