It is 9:20 a.m., low tide, and a mild breeze is blowing across the
Lagoon Pond drawbridge. Light from the eastern sky skips across the pond
until it reaches the bridge's shadow, which darkens the outer
harbor. The hum of the drawspan, which vibrates with traffic, has
stopped. There is only the water below, lapping against the timber
spiles.
Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs shellfishermen saw a banner start to
the bay scalloping season, and they share their reason why: Lagoon Pond.
Derek Cimeno, shellfish constable for Tisbury, is watching
shellfishermen surrounded in bay scallops. "Six hundred bushels of
bay scallops were taken in the first two days by family
shellfishermen," Mr. Cimeno said.
In Historic First, Vineyard Boys Reach Soccer Championship; Game
Tomorrow

For the first time in school history, the varsity boys' soccer
team has advanced to the regional championships, with a 1-0 victory over
Sandwich last night in the regional semi-final.
The regional final will be played at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Brockton High
School againstMiddleboro, which advanced with a 2-1 win over Somerset.
Unionized mental health counselors at Martha's Vineyard Community Services hesitated this week - delaying a possible move to strike while awaiting newly-promised face to face meetings with board members of the health and human services agency.
A strained encounter at Community Service's annual board meeting Tuesday afternoon, however, suggested the time out may not last for long.
It started two weeks ago when one of the four underwater cables
providing electricity to the Vineyard failed somewhere between Falmouth
and West Chop.
Then, last Saturday, a second cable failed.
The executive director of the Seafarers' Friends told a group
of Islanders on Wednesday night he is working on a plan to leave a
sizable portion of the Goldberg Fund to the Permanent Endowment Fund for
Martha's Vineyard.

Land Court Upholds Power of MVC To Review 40B Housing Projects

For the second time in less than two years, yesterday a
Massachusetts Land Court judge ruled that the Martha's Vineyard
Commission has full power of review over low and moderate income housing
projects under Chapter 40B, a section of state law commonly known as the
anti-snob zoning statute.
The Lagoon Pond drawbridge will be closed for repairs from 9 a.m. to
3 p.m. all next week while MassHighway workers replace some of the
bridge's structural steel. Traffic along Beach Road will be
diverted to the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road during those hours.
"This is part of the ongoing effort to make interim repairs as
we work toward installing the temporary bridge and eventually the
replacement," MassHighway spokesman Jon Carlisle said yesterday.

Despite whatever contentious spirits might occasionally lurk about,
this weekend once again proves the Vineyard is the kind of place where
things that go bump in the night are usually giggling, and children who
dart around in the dark and cluster at their neighbors' doors are
there to receive smiles and sweets.
