Wynton Marsalis, the jazz composer, band leader and trumpet player, brought his quintet to the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs on Saturday evening. The concert, entitled Treasures at Dusk, featured some new compositions and old standards that saw an enthusiastic reception from the audience. Mr. Marsalis is also managing and artistic director of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
A large dead leatherback turtle that was more than five and a half feet long washed up at Great Rock Bight beach on the north shore last Tuesday afternoon. The beach is owned by the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank. Land bank property foreman Matthew N. Dix said the New England Aquarium was contacted, but then the turtle washed back out into the Sound.
Mr. Dix speculated that the turtle may have been killed by a boat, as it had large gashes on it that could have come from a propeller.
The Permanent Endowment for Martha’s Vineyard is accepting applications for its fall grant cycle. Through its grants program, the Endowment seeks to raise awareness of Vineyard issues, respond to community needs, foster collaboration among nonprofit organizations and support innovative approaches to improving the quality of life on the Island.
The Martha’s Vineyard team of the American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands Chapter will host a fundraiser on Tuesday, August 21 at Black Sheep in Edgartown. The evening will feature three pairings of wine, cheese and charcuterie at two seating options, 6 and 8:15 p.m. Tickets are $55 and may be purchased in advance at Black Sheep, 18 North Summer street, or by calling 774-549-9118. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to help maintain the many services that the American Red Cross provides on Martha’s Vineyard to seasonal and year-round residents.
Coast Guard rescue crews medically evacuated a 13-year-old boy Saturday afternoon, after Martha’s Vineyard Hospital alerted the Coast Guard that no medical flight crew was available to transport the boy to a mainland hospital.
An Air Station Cape Cod MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew was launched and safely transported the injured boy to Massachusetts General Hospital. The boy was suffering from a severe groin injury.
Dukes County ended the fiscal year with an estimated surplus of about $150,000, the county treasurer reported this week. A preliminary report of the county’s favorable finances was given to county commissioners last week.
State environmental officials traveled to the Vineyard on Friday morning to formally present more than $284,000 in grants to help pay for clean energy projects for the towns of Tisbury and West Tisbury through the Green Communities Act.
Mark Sylvia, the Massachusetts Commissioner of Energy Resources, and Rick Sullivan, the state Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs, joined state Sen. Dan Wolf and Rep. Tim Madden in congratulating the towns for their designations. The presentation took place on the grounds of the Agricultural Fair in West Tisbury.
