Romance of Oceanography
Chilmark native Conrad Neumann will present a free program titled The Romance of Oceanography: Science, Scenery and Poetry, at the Chilmark Public Library on Thursday, August 5 from 5 to 6 p.m.
Mr. Neumann, of Chilmark and Chapel Hill, N.C., taught geology and oceanography at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill for many years.
Hiroshima Memorial
The annual memorial of the dropping of the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan will be held on Friday, August 6, at the Aquinah Lighthouse at 6 a.m. Join others for a sunrise service of prayers, words, songs, and silence. There will be ride shares leaving from Cronig’s in Vineyard Haven at 5:15 a.m., and Alley’s in West Tisbury at 5:30 a.m. sharp.
Hello Chloe
Heidi and Peter Cook of Edgartown announce the birth of a daughter, Chloe Jane Cook, born on July 30, 2010, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Chloe weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces at birth. She is welcomed by big brother Kenny.
Sublime Tribute Show
Sublime tribute band Badfish is performing at Nectar’s in Edgartown on Thursday, August 5. Doors open at 9 p.m. for ages 18 and over; tickets are $17 in advance or $22 at the door.
The Louisa Gould Gallery is offering an oil painting workshop on Tuesday, August 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with Christopher Pendergast.
The workshop will begin with a brief demonstration on starting a painting in oils including; set up, materials, laying out a palette, and choosing a subject matter. Blocking out space, the correct use of medium, and drawing with brushes and paint will also be covered. Attendees will then work in the materials of their choice.
Shaw Cramer opens its third Double Feature special exhibit — presenting the art work of Leslie Baker and Eric Jensen in the main gallery with Elizabeth Lockhart Taft and Eileen Braun in the upper spotlight gallery — with an artists’ reception on Friday, July 30 from 6 to 8 p.m.
The Crisis of Liberal Zionism is the name of Peter Beinart’s lecture and discussion on Friday, August 6, at 6:30 p.m. following the 6 o’clock Shabbat service at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center.
Mr. Beinart is a fellow at the New America Foundation and associate professor of journalism and political science at the City University of New York. He is also senior political writer for The Daily Beast, and a contributor to Time among other media.
