Site preparation for the Gay Head Light relocation is progressing quickly, with the excavation work nearly complete, and the actual move now planned to begin on June 10. The lighthouse now sits 46 feet from the eroding Gay Head Cliffs.

For the second time in two months, playing at home on Thursday afternoon the Vineyard girls edged out a 3-2 victory over Barnstable.

Voters in West Tisbury made themselves heard loud and clear at the ballot box last month when they rejected a request to override the state tax cap for school spending.

Interim Edgartown police chief Jack Collins conducted an evaluation and search for a successor to retiring police chief Antone Bettencourt. Mr. Collins issued an 89-page report which offers high praise for the police department and its officers, but also makes wide-ranging recommendations for improvement.

Town meeting season comes to an end as Aquinnah gathers for its meeting Tuesday; the town will have the final say in whether to pay for the purchase of a new Center for Living for Island seniors. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Old Town Hall, following a special town meeting at 6:45 p.m.

The up-Island regional school district committee struggled to make significant cuts to its budget this week amid growing confusion over the implications of West Tisbury’s refusal to pay all of its share.

In the only contested race in Aquinnah this year, longtime selectman James Newman will face challenger Barbara Bassett for a three-year term on the board. The town election is Wednesday from noon to 7 p.m. at the Aquinnah town office building.
