Venus and Jupiter Get Closer

Tomorrow night’s first quarter moon appears to the west of the bright planet Jupiter. The two are high in the southern sky, and easy to spot. Both are near the zodiacal constellation Leo. We saw these two celestial objects together a month ago.

There is one significant difference with this astronomical event compared to an almost identical pairing of the moon and Jupiter last month. Standing outside early at night, look to the west and note that the two brightest planets in our evening sky, Jupiter and Venus, appear closer together.

On Chappy: April 24

The trouble with sharing weekly column duties (beside the obvious issues of ego) is that one can’t depend on one’s colleague not to hog all the good stories. What more can be said about the closing of the breach or the ferry that hasn’t already been written by Peter? Not much. And without those two topics, I’m left with what follows:

Road Rage: Uber Tests Vineyard Waters, Riling Cab Companies

Ride-sharing service Uber is testing the waters on Martha’s Vineyard. While there are no firm plans to expand Uber service to the Island, the company began advertising for drivers this week. Local cab companies said they fear Uber would quickly put them out of business.

Aquinnah Town Column: April 24

Spring is getting better by the day, with temperatures in the 60s most of the week. Families are arriving for the school vacation to open their summer homes, a few are vacationing elsewhere while school is out. More restaurants and businesses are opening. Josh Aronie and his food truck continue serving lunch each day at the Chilmark Store lot. Enjoy.

Retiring Superintendent to Make Farewell Speaking Tour

In the months leading up to his retirement, the Vineyard schools superintendent will be appearing around the Island to deliver parting words and share a look at the state of the schools. Dr. James H. Weiss will be retiring June 30 after about 10 years as superintendent.

Vineyard Haven Town Column: April 24

Everything Is Happening in Garden World

When it comes to birds, what I don’t know is a lot. I keep promising myself that I will take up bird watching when I’m old.

After Rough Winter, Trees Feel the Heat

Some of our evergreens are struggling. Notice the yellow, brown or red leaves on normally green plants, and the dead-looking limbs on the trees and shrubs in your yard.
