The Charles Morgan has come and gone. Ah, what a beautiful sight in our Vineyard Haven harbor. Unfortunately, I was unable to get on it, but it certainly improved the view every time I drove by.
In the warm weather here you can wear a short sleeve shirt, long sleeves, shorts or pants. There is blue sky and soft breeze — perfect. Who could ask for more?
Joshua Baker, of Vineyard Haven, was awarded a bachelor’s of science degree in mechanical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in May 2014.
Alexandra Flake, of Vineyard Haven, graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s of science degree from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y.
Jacob N. Ferry received a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy and psychology from Boston University in May 2014.
Martha’s Vineyard Magazine heralded the previously moribund whaling business on Martha’s Vineyard in its May/June issue by announcing the June 18 visit of the Charles W. Morgan, America’s last wooden whaleship. The Martha’s Vineyard Museum hosted Eric Jay Dolin, the author of Leviathan, one of the more complete and contemporary books on whaling, at the Federated Church on June 3. The Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse debuted The Whaleship Essex by Joe Forbrich last Saturday, and I visited the Charles W. Morgan on Monday.
A few weeks back, after an afternoon spent thinning her garlic plants, Sue Silva had a large bag of young garlic that she offered to our group of knitters. No one jumped at the offer of spring garlic, so she was planning to put them in her compost.
It is remarkable that we have had so little rain in the past two months and the perennials still look so wonderful. The newly planted baby annuals, not so much!
A visit or two aboard the Charles W. Morgan was absolutely the peak of my summer season already. Thank you to Matthew Stackpole for making his dream a reality.
Chilmark joins all those who very much enjoyed having the restored whaler Charles W. Morgan brought to Vineyard Haven. It is a beautiful restoration and those involved were rightly proud of their work and enjoyed sharing with us.
