MV Democrats Welcome Gubernatorial Candidate Martha Coakley

The Democratic Council of Martha’s Vineyard welcomes Martha Coakley, candidate for the Democratic nomination for governor, to its meeting on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Howes House in West Tisbury.

Art in the Stacks

After a long career in the aerospace industry, Bob Schaefer began channeling his engineering creativity to creating art. Mr. Shaefer is a lifetime New Englander and spends half the year on the Vineyard. He works primarily in oil and watercolor.

Currently his work is featured as part of the November Art in the Stacks exhibit at the Vineyard Haven library. The exhibit will be on display at the library during regular hours throughout the month of November.

Tall Tales at Tisbury

Tisbury School fourth graders collaborated with art and music teachers to create a full production of Musical Tall Tales. The show is a one night only affair, playing at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8 at the Tisbury School.

To prepare, each child took a turn trying all the roles needed to put on a successful production. IMP’s Donna Swift, music teacher at Oak Bluffs School Brian Weiland and Ross Mihalko helped with the words and music.

Admission to the show is free.

Next up, the Edgartown School’s production of Annie Jr. on Nov. 15 and 16.

A Winter’s Walk

On Sunday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m. a guided hike at the Gay Head Cliffs kicks off the winter walk series for the Vineyard Conservation Society. The process of erosion and the geological significance of the cliffs will be brought to light during this teaching trek led by amateur geologist Bob Woodruff and VCS Executive Director Brendan O’Neill.

History Via Vecchia Theatre

Students at the Tisbury School will study women in history through a theatre program led by Phyllis Vecchia. Eighth graders will reenact history with the women of the Salem witch trials and sixth graders will study Abigail Adams, Eleanor Roosevelt, Laura Jernegan and women of the whaling era. The program is offered through support from the town of Tisbury, Martha’s Vineyard Center for the Visual Arts, Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank Charitable Fund and private donors.

Paper Charts Go the Way of Sextant in Digital Age

For many boaters the writing was already on the wall, but now it’s official. The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, office of nautical charts, announced last week it is moving out of the chart printing business. Next April the Maryland government facility that prints them will close.

The NOAA Office of Coastal Survey Marine Chart Division will continue to keep all its waterway information up to date using high-tech measures involving survey work, and charts will be electronically accessible for free in a number of ways.
