Our featured animals this week are all the beautiful cats at the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard who need to find new homes. All are beautiful, well-behaved and very well-socialized, thanks to our great volunteers who spend hours with each cat in our wonderful new rocking chair.
Both varsity hockey teams play on home ice Saturday in a pair of league matchups, with the boys playing their last Eastern Athletic Conference game of the regular season. Be sure to support the girls’ basketball team during one (or all) of their three home games this week. The team plays at 4:30 p.m. today, Tuesday and Thursday.
Youth Hockey News
Youth hockey teams took home wins at all levels last weekend, with the Mites defeating Yarmouth twice on Saturday (5-3 and 2-1) and Gateway on Sunday (final score 3-1). The wins secured a playoff berth for the Mites.
The Peewees move to a 10-2-2 record after two wins against Gateway on Sunday. This month brings a bevy of challenges for the team in the forms of undefeated Nantucket and league-leading Lower Cape. The Vineyard takes on Lower Cape on home ice this Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and 11:50 a.m.
Tisbury police arrested two Bridgewater men this week for attempting to steal a 1,000-pound lead sailboat keel.
Corey M. Dechaine, 19 and James Carroll McFarland, 21, were apprehended in broad daylight on Monday on property off Oak Hill Road used by Gannon and Benjamin Marine Railway for the storage of boat parts.
The West Tisbury Library Foundation, Inc. announced this week that it had surpassed an important milestone in its capital campaign: the state requirement of raising $902,000 in private matching funds by Jan. 31. “We’re pleased that our campaign so far has received more than $1.3 million in private donations,” said Hunter Moorman, chair of the foundation. He added, however, the campaign must still meet the town’s fund-raising goal as well.
Town leaders in Tisbury and Oak Bluffs had their first look at the drawings for a permanent Lagoon Pond drawbridge last week.
The drawings were on display during a meeting at the Martha’s Vineyard Commission office in Oak Bluffs. The federally-funded $28.5 million project is expected to take three years to build; construction bids are slated to be advertised in the fall.
Dean’s List
Benjamin Hopkins of Vineyard Haven, a member of the class of 2013 at Connecticut College, was named to the dean’s list for the 2011 fall semester.
Help is on the way to improve water circulation in Farm Pond in Oak Bluffs.
The town learned this week that it had received an $80,000 grant to complete the engineering and permitting for a wider culvert, intended to help restore the health of the pond by allowing a greater exchange with the sea.
Correction
An article in last week’s paper about business changes in Vineyard Haven incorrectly identified the name of a potential new restaurant. M.V. Winery is the name of a corporation set up by chef Josh Aronie; he has not yet chosen a name for a restaurant that he hopes to open in the fomer Che’s Lounge space, pending approval by the town.
