“I’ve had people ask me if I had any low-fat and I look at them like you’ve got to be kidding me,” owner Dee Smith said at her Tea Lane Catering kitchen in Chilmark this week. “There’s a need for gluten free and we’re just starting with that, but there’s certainly no word like low-fat in our category of pies.”

News Update: Thursday, Dec. 22 - SSA Freight and Lobster Boat Collide

There were no injuries and no damage following a brief collision between the freight ferry Katama and a Vineyard lobster boat on Wednesday afternoon, the Steamship Authority said in a statement.

The steamship Martha’s Vineyard hasn’t set sail from Woods Hole since 1956 but its steam whistle is still causing a headache for the Steamship Authority.

At their monthly meeting this week the boat line governers met in executive session to discuss whether to sue current SSA Capt. Bruce Malenfant to recover what may be the SS Martha’s Vineyard’s long-lost steam whistle. But the Malenfants believe it’s a case of mistaken identity.

News Update: Monday, Dec. 19 - Charges Expected in Edgartown Wastewater Fraud Investigation

A nine-month investigation into fraud at the Edgartown wastewater department came to a head on Monday when the Edgartown district court issued a criminal complaint against a septic hauler who repeatedly failed to properly record his deliveries at the town treatment plant. The investigation, conducted by the Cape and Islands district attorney’s office, as well as state and Edgartown police, also pointed to possible violations of the state ethics law by an unnamed town selectman and town employees.

Bourne Bridge Fully Re-Opened

All four traffic lanes on the Bourne Bridge have been reopened following a weeks-long steel repair project, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District has announced.

Steel repair work will continue below the road deck on the Bourne Bridge until the fall of 2012, resulting in occasional one-day lane restrictions during the next couple of weeks and through the fall of 2012.
