Vineyarders Join Faiths to Offer Holiday Thanks

Vineyarders Join Faiths to Offer Holiday Thanks

By NIS KILDEGAARD

"For the beauty and wonder of your creation, in earth and sky
and sea," read Varian Cassat from her place at the pulpit, and the
congregation sent its response echoing from the high ceilings of Grace
Church: "We thank you, God."

The litany of gratitude found its cadence and continued:

"For our daily food and drink, our homes and families, and our
friends:"

"We thank you, God."

Meet DJ Indi and Her Drum Sidekick Scott; Duo Enlivens Island Night Life Music Scene

Diana Reilly's cookbook calls for 30 pounds of vinyl, two
turntables, a mini disco ball and a fistful of blue marbles. For Scott
Hershowitz, the concoction is a little more bizarre: two conga drums, a
twisty little mallet, a roll of duct tape and two elastic strands beaded
with camel toenails.

Island Football Rivalry Spans the Generations

The record shows that in 1953, an informal team of Vineyarders played football against Nantucket High School, losing 33-20. A rematch the next year yielded a scoreless tie.

Five years later, in 1959, Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School opened its doors, bringing together under one roof the ninth, 10th, 11th and 12th-graders from all six Island towns. This school consolidation enabled the Island to field an interscholastic football team for the first time, and official competition against Nantucket High School began in 1960.

Travis Tuck: A life Lived on the Wind

Travis Tuck, metal sculptor, died on Monday evening in the company
of a band of close friends. Mr. Tuck, 59, of Vineyard Haven, was the
Island's most celebrated artisan. He made weather vanes of copper
and bronze, but saying that doesn't come close to describing the
many facets of either his artistry or his personality.

Board Blocks Big House Plan

The Edgartown planning board this week blocked construction of a
massive residence on Chappaquiddick, a 10,000-square-foot home slotted
for an exposed bluff overlooking Wasque. Tuesday night's vote on a
special permit - three in favor and two against - fell one
shy of the needed four-vote majority.

New Evidence Confirms Violent Crash of Small Plane in Waters off Vineyard

disappeared 10 days ago were killed in a catastrophic crash in Vineyard
waters.

Fast Ferry Cuts 30 Seconds on Run of 572 Feet

Fast ferries have been much in the news these days, especially on
the Vineyard, but here is a fresh question to ponder: What happens when
a ferry that plies what is arguably the shortest route in the world
suddenly becomes faster?

Of course the answer is simple enough - the ferry gets there
faster. On the Chappaquiddick ferry this means a route that now takes
about two minutes has now been shortened by about 30 seconds.

Master Plan for Airport Provides for Expansion, but No New County Jail

The long-awaited master plan for the Martha's Vineyard Airport
envisions longer and wider run-ways, more hangars, a bigger main
terminal and room for retail shopping - all that but no land for a
new jail.
