Size No Drawback as Sailboats Battle in Race Around Vineyard

A Vineyard sailor in one of the smallest boats was among the winners of Saturday’s ’Round the Island Race.

Roger Becker, in a bright red 24-foot sailboat called Gloria, was one of four first-place winners. The race was part of this past weekend’s 85th annual Edgartown Yacht Club Regatta.

Thirty-seven sailboats participated in this year’s ’Round the Island contest. It truly was challenging because of the lack of enough wind.

Sailboats Prepare for Weekend’s Vineyard Cup

The third annual Vineyard Cup, one of the Island’s biggest sailing events, will take place this coming weekend.

At last count more than 60 boats have registered to sail in Nantucket Sound over the weekend, but the event begins Thursday morning with windsurfing in Vineyard Haven outer harbor.

The Cup starts with the two-day East Coast Junior Olympic Windsurfing Championships, which begin at 9 a.m. at the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club.

Cape Cod League Plays Exhibition Game on Island

Just picture a clear and sunny July afternoon at the ballpark on the Vineyard.

The home team is down in the bottom of the ninth when a lanky outfielder projected by many scouts to be a future major leaguer strides to the plate with a chance to win the game for the hometown nine.

Take Cottagers’ House Tour on Thursday

The Cottagers’ 26th annual House Tour will be held on Thursday, July 17, rain or shine. In the fine tradition of distinctive homes associated with the event, five cottages will be on tour.

Two cottages are on Ocean avenue across from Ocean Park, and two houses and the historical Shearer Cottage are in the area of East Chop known as the Highlands.

No Slowing Down: Dilly Walsh Mixes Up a Big Benefit Party

Tom (Dilly) Walsh grew up in the Bronx. He’s been going fast all his life.

Now he’s going even faster because time is running out for the 60-year-old former Island bartender and real estate professional, afflicted with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

On Thursday night, Mr. Walsh will host Vineyard Night, an auction fundraiser in his home at 320 Middle Road in Chilmark to benefit Compassionate Care ALS, one of the few resources available to victims of ALS.

Rotary Antiques Show Features Rare Tapestries

The 37th Annual Martha’s Vineyard Antiques Show, benefiting the Rotary Club of Martha’s Vineyard, opens Thursday for a weekend program in the Edgartown Elementary School on the West Tisbury Road in Edgartown,

Raising Boys, Raising Girls: Scholars Talk for Parents

Queen Bees and Wannabes author Rosalind Wiseman will square off with psychologist Michael Thompson in a discussion on the do’s and don’ts of raising girls versus boys on Wednesday at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center in Vineyard Haven.

Ms. Wiseman’s reputation has been built on striving for justice and empowerment for girls, and she has written and spoken extensively on the topic.

Night Hikes and Moonlight Kayaks on Chappy

Tonight The Trustees of Reservations offers a family night hike from 8 to 9:15 p.m. at Cape Pogue Wildlife Refuge on Chappaquiddick. Families with children ages 4 to 8 can strap on headlamps and take a guided hike in search of night time creatures. Preregistration is required. Transportation from the Chappy ferry is available. The cost is $10 per child, with a parent or guardian free.
