The weekend weather was mixed. On Saturday, an Islandwide bicycle race was held although the weather was raw and filled with showers. Sunday found us under a blue sky with milder temperatures. The orioles have returned to town. The late Emma Whiting had records to prove that they always return by May 12 and bird watchers will keep a sharp eye out for them on Monday. The Vineyard Transit Authority buses began operating on their seasonal schedule last Saturday mo rning with additional weekend trips.

The wet-dry vote was certainly a thing of interest and much media attention focused on our little town. Thanks to our town clerk, Marion, and all our counters and participants who worked so diligently last Friday. Our restaurant owners and the small town shops need to lure business here — as you know, they were the reason I supported a change. I wish them all the best and hope for a great season for them.

Chilmark is greening up quickly. Lots of trees are leafing out and the birds are feeding young already. Some proud geese are parading their goslings around town and things in general are in a rapid slide into summer.

Best wishes from us all to Polly Meinelt who spent part of last week at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. We hope her health is improving quickly at home in the care of her husband, Ted. Ted tells us he has had some good reports on his own health.
