Coolidge Visits Vineyard: Vice-President Guest of Mr. and Mrs. William M. Butler

Vice President and Mrs. Coolidge and their two sons, have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. William M. Butler at Mohu, their Lambert's Cove estate, for several days. They left Tuesday. Others in the party at Mohu included Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stearns of Boston, and a member of the secret service.

Hooch, not home brewed or moonshine distilled, but old fashioned 100 proof, of every conceivable kind, from plain cheap rum to the highest grade of champagne, is being openly sold and in large quantities with 30 miles of Martha's Vineyard.

According to stories of fishermen and yachtsmen, “rum-runners” are plying a regular trade between the Vineyard and the mainland. Island fishermen go so far as to give the name of the boat, whose home port is not known, which they say is engaged in the illicit traffic and has been seen repeatedly under suspicious circumstances.

Island Library Trustees Meet

Representatives of the Vineyard Libraries met at the Oak Bluffs Library on April 21st for the purpose of forming a collection of Vineyard literature for use by the County’s Public Libraries. The Committee organized as follows: President, Mr. Marshall Shepard; Editor, Dr. Charles E. Banks; Treasurer, Mr. Walter Ripley; Secretary, Mrs. Johnson Whiting.
 

Vineyard Ghost Stories: The Crying Swamp

Near the north shore of the island just inshore from Cedar Tree Neck is what is left of the Crying Swamp. Here today is a small cranberry bog, surrounded by swamp bushes just like a hundred similar spots on the Vineyard.
