Globs of Glass

There is a bright side to everything, says a true optimist.

While I am not always optimistic, I do try to make lemonade out of lemons. Consider the problem of trash in our oceans. You may wonder, where is the good in that? Yet it’s true that one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. I found a bounty of good garbage in the form of sea glass on a recent trip to Nicaragua.

Annual Osprey Festival

Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary’s annual osprey festival is set for April 4 from 9 to 11 a.m. (with a rain date of April 5) and guess who will be there? Felix Neck’s osprey. We have a pair. The male arrived on the morning of March 31 just in the nick of time. The female joined him on Wednesday. Come celebrate the return of the sanctuary’s osprey as well as many others that have returned to nest on the Island. You will discover facts about the fish hawk through a variety of activities including a talk about native birds by Rob Culbert. Crafts, guided walks and talks will whet your appetites. You can grab lunch foods, baked goods and beverages and munch away while enjoying live music by the Flying Elbows. The cost for members is $3; $6 for nonmembers.

The Vineyard Gardener

By LYNNE IRONS

Let me just correct last week’s column. It was congressional representative from Georgia John Lewis, not Hughes, who led the three-day civil rights pilgrimage to Selma, Montgomery and Birmingham.

Sophomores Speak Out

As spring approaches, students become stressed and anxious about MCAS tests. We are told “you’ll do fine” and “just do your best” by our teachers and parents. But these exams are still very stressful for students. MCAS is a standardized test. Based on your results, it puts you in categories ranging from receiving a warning to being considered “advanced.” Being put in a category just stresses us out even more. We all know that a student can be smart and not a good test-taker.

New Hospital Evokes Memories of Old

O n Saturday, Feb. 14, we set out in the morning from Chilmark for a shop in town and a Valentine’s Day drive. It was a sunny day though terribly cold and strangely still back in Vineyard Haven on this long winter weekend to mark Presidents’ Day — a great opportunity for Islanders to escape to mainland shops, northern ski slopes, or Bahamian bliss. After a quick grocery shop, my husband Peter and I left town behind and drove past the frozen quiet MV Shipyard, the windswept buildings of the Packer Company, and out along the causeway toward Oak Bluffs.

My dear friends on the Island and off the Island who came to honor my incredibly wonderful husband Luther who lost his battle with cancer, I thank you for walking and driving the last miles with our good friend.
